Fascia
.
As we age, fascia—the connective tissue wrapping muscles and organs—becomes stiffer, less hydrated, and less elastic, leading to reduced mobility, increased joint stiffness, and a higher risk of injuries. It often becomes thicker, more brittle, and develops adhesions, which causes pain, weakens muscle connections, and contributes to skin sagging.
Key Concepts of Fascia in TCM
- The "Net" of the Body: Fascia is a 3D, web-like tissue that connects all structures. It is often considered the physical, anatomical substrate for TCM meridians.
- Meridian Alignment: The network of fascia in the body, particularly the fascia surrounding muscle groups, aligns with the meridian lines used in acupuncture.
- Tissue Health and Qi: When fascia is healthy, it is pliable, hydrated, and allows smooth, painless movement. When damaged, it becomes thick, restricted, and causes pain.
Fascia is essential in TCM because it is highly innervated (containing numerous neurological receptors), allowing it to sense, adapt, and play a crucial role in both structural support and the energetic (Qi) balance of the body.
The Fascia-Meridian Connection
- Anatomical Overlap: Research indicates an approximately 80% correlation between acupuncture points and fascial planes or intermuscular septa.
- Qi as Fascial Function: The traditional functions of Qi—movement, protection, and warming—mirror the modern physiological roles of healthy, sliding fascia.
- Mechanical Communication: When an acupuncture needle is inserted and rotated, it physically "grasps" the fascia, triggering a cascade of mechanical signals (mechanotransduction) that can travel through the connective tissue to distant parts of the body.
- Bioelectricity: Fascia generates a piezoelectric charge when stretched or compressed, potentially explaining how energy signals move through the body's "kinetic web".
How to Maintain Fascia Health:
- Regular Movement: Yoga, Pilates, and gentle stretching help maintain flexibility.
- Hydration: Maintaining adequate hydration keeps the tissue pliable.
- Fascia Release Techniques: Foam rollers, massage balls, and fascia massage help break up adhesions and increase circulation.
- Strength Training: This supports structural integrity and stimulates collagen production.

Movement
"Movement is so important, especially as we age. I started noticing body pains and joint stiffness at 50, which is why I started a daily practice of 20-30 minutes of exercise each day and within just one month, I noticed that the stiffness had gone away and so I continue, as a commitment to myself, a morning practice, to keep my body moving, healthy and strong, for years to come, and you can do it too,..because you're worth it, and what better way to start the day?"
